Joining a Union with No Experience: Is It Possible?

Not only is it possible, it’s exactly why union apprenticeship programs exist. They are specifically for people without trade experience who want to join a union but have no experience. You’re hired to learn, get trained by pro, and earn a recognized credential that gives you long-time job security — all without tuition or being stuck with student loan debt. If you’re in the Kansas City region (western Missouri or all of Kansas), IUOE Local 101 is the operators union to check out.
Do You Need Experience to Join a Union?
Not for entry routes like an apprenticeship. Building trades unions (including Operating Engineers) design apprenticeships as earn-while-you-learn programs so beginners can start safely and progress quickly. Nationally, building trades guidance emphasizes that no prior experience is required. Programs are built to teach from the ground up.
How Many People Join a Union Without Experience?
Local, year-by-year numbers aren’t always published. Broadly, building-trades resources note that most members begin with little or no prior experience, which is exactly why apprentice programs are offered. After all, you don’t wake up one morning knowing how to operate a crane. Everyone must start somewhere.
What Qualities do Unions Look for in Beginners?
- Safety mindset and reliability (show up, ask questions, follow procedures)
- Coachability (listen to journey-level mentors; take and learn from feedback)
- Mechanical curiosity (you like tools, machines or building systems)
- Valid driver’s license and availability (you can get to jobsites and training)
IUOE locals also prioritize structured training and industry credentials so beginners can move up to higher-skill, higher-pay seats.
Basic Qualifications for Operating Engineer Apprenticeships
You can apply without prior trade experience. Local 101 has these basic qualifications for Operating Engineer apprenticeships: 18+, high school diploma/GED (or transcript), valid driver’s license, OSHA-10 Construction, proof of residency (past six months), Social Security card, birth certificate and DD-214 for veterans.
Beginner-Friendly Union Roles You Can Start With an Apprenticeship
- Operating Engineers (IUOE): heavy equipment (dozers, excavators, cranes, graders, pavers, see the full list), rigging & signaling, GPS/laser grade; plus stationary engineer roles operating big-building and industrial systems.
- Many other trades (electricians, carpenters, laborers, ironworkers) offer similar entry apprenticeships, but IUOE is the path if you want big equipment or plant operations.
First Steps if You’re Starting From the Ground Up
Does It Cost Anything to Start?
No tuition is involved with a registered apprenticeship. You’ll budget for basics (boots/PPE, permit/ID fees) and member dues once you’re active. Local 101’s apprenticeship itself is free, but dues are separate.
Where Local 101 Operates
Local 101’s jurisdiction covers 56 counties in western Missouri and the entire state of Kansas, with three full-time training sites to help make union membership accessible to anyone who wants to join.
Local 101 has been building talent pipelines with area schools. For example, Ray-Pec High School students in a Heavy Equipment Operating program graded a community lake project and that program feeds straight into Local 101’s apprenticeship.

If you’re coming from high school with zero experience, this is exactly the kind of program that gets you moving in a long-term stable career.
What Happens After You Join the Union?
You’ll split time between training centers and paid jobsites, adding credentials (e.g., forklift, crane/OECP, CDL prep, OSHA) as you go. The hall helps connect qualified members to contractors, so you’re not looking for work on your own. Finish the program, “journey out,” and keep upgrading for bigger equipment and higher-pay dispatches. All the while, earning good pay, healthcare benefits and a retirement plan.
Why Starting Now is a Smart Move for the Future
- You get paid to learn instead of paying to sit in a classroom.
- You graduate with experience and a portable credential, not just a certificate.
- You join a union that negotiates wages and benefits and backs you up on the job. That’s a smart move now and for your future.
